20% Time Project

2nd blog_2019.2.1

This week, I registered for a Jazz Piano academy named "Piano Bridge," and I decided to take a lesson every Sunday after church for 4 months.

Last Sunday was my first lesson: I mainly learned about what the Jazz Piano is and Major & Minor chords. My piano teacher played few Jazz songs for me and explained about important characteristics of Jazz music. We can identify Jazz by a few distinguishing traits: swing and syncopation, improvisation, bent notes and modes, and distinctive voices. Jazz is a musical form that relies on improvisation and rhythmic urgency. Improvisation is a primary way that Jazz musicians express themselves, requiring them to be inventive and create music on the spot. Such musical artists often do this by changing melodies rhythmically or embellishing the melody. The rhythm of Jazz is often syncopated, which is when accents occur on the off-beat, and it may be polyrhythmic, which is when multiple, contrasting rhythms occur at the same time. Overall, my first lesson was very interesting with no difficulties, but I feel sorry that I don't have more time to practice the piano on weekdays.

This Sunday, I will be learning sus4 piano chords and will be practicing these chords by playing my favorite pop songs.
